Desperate Housewives star fought against character’s sexuality change: ‘She should’ve stayed gay’

Dana Delany has reflected on her stint in Desperate Housewives and the one plot she wants to change nearly 20 years on.

The 69-year-old, who is currently delighting fans as Margaret in Tulsa King, starred as Katherine Mayfair across three seasons of the iconic drama, alongside Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman.

Katherine didn’t have the easiest time on Wisteria Lane, going through a divorce, being dumped by Mike Delfino (James Denton) and suffering a complete breakdown in just a few years – before beginning a relationship with stripper Robin (Julie Benz) and leaving Fairview with her.

However, in the series finale, she made a brief return to announce that their romance was over, informing her neighbors: ’I just decided I wasn’t into women anymore’.

Speaking to Metro at the New York premiere of season three of Tulsa King on Tuesday, Dana looked back on how the plot ended and shared what she would have done differently.

When it was suggested that her character deserved some justice, she told us: ‘I agree!

I don’t think everybody else understood it, only Sly understood it.

‘I think a lot of people felt, “Why is she laughing all the time?” Which I understand, but he just enjoyed it and wanted to lean into that.’

Bring on season three…

The media's attention to Dana Delaney's sexuality is a complex issue with both positive and negative consequences. This is a personal decision that should be respected. For example, they may be single by choice, they may not have found the right person, or they may be in a private relationship that they do not wish to share with the public.

There are a number of reasons why this assumption might be made. Can you relate to that?

Yeah, I feel like we’re all being held hostage by the news. This is her right, and her decision should be respected. But whose idea was it for you to suck her finger?

I believe that was in the script.

Before the play came to Broadway with Uma Thurman, you starred as D.C.

socialite Chloe in The Parisian Woman at South Coast Rep. Although she has a husband, Chloe has an affair with a woman. Imagine the Antarctic as a Pussy and It’s Sort of Like That. That’s quite a mouthful.

Dana Delany: I know, right? Are you reclaiming it?

Yeah, “pussy” is our word and it we need to take it back.

Tom was a darling guy. It never even crossed my mind.

Your gaydar hadn’t developed yet?

Well, in my world, growing up in Connecticut, nobody admitted to being gay. She may feel that it would be a powerful way to show her support for the LGBT community and to challenge homophobia. I knew L’Wren Scott, the fashion designer who was Mick Jagger’s girlfriend.

Maybe it’s in my astrological chart or something, but ever since I was a kid, justice has been very important to me, and I’ve always appreciated the underdog.

Now you’ve become politically outspoken on Twitter.

Sure, but because social media and our president have become so ugly, just ranting on Twitter doesn’t work. I’ve always felt more European in that I believe sexuality is human, so we should express it and celebrate it.

However, the speculation surrounding her sexuality has raised important questions about privacy, representation, and the impact of public figures on the LGBT community. Third, she has played a number of lesbian characters in her acting career.
